James Wright Beswick and sons John and Gilbert Beswick and Gilbert founded Beswick in 1892. The Beswick factory, formerly the Gold Street Works, was located in Longton in Staffordshire, the heart of the English pottery industry.
Originally a manufacturer of affordable utilitarian tableware such as under-glazed items, printed dinnerware, and hospital ware, Beswick quickly began producing highly detailed ornamental pieces such as decorated pots, pedestals, toby jugs, majolica vases and figurines of cats, dogs and horses. These early figurines were received well and became Beswick’s focus as the company expanded in the early twentieth century. In 1919, Beswick acquired the Warwick China Works in Longton.
