Offered for sale is a rare Victorian jug for liquids, produced in 1887 to commemorate the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria’s reign. In 1887, the British Empire celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of Victoria’s accession to the throne, with the main festivities taking place on June 20, marked by a grand banquet attended by kings and princes from around the world.
The jug is decorated with commemorative motifs including the inscription “Jubilee 1887”, a crown, and a portrait image of Queen Victoria in ceremonial dress. Its form and decoration are fully in keeping with Victorian aesthetics, combining practicality with the solemn character of a commemorative object.
For its age, the jug has survived in exceptionally fine condition, with no losses, chips, or signs of restoration.
